My observation about the ol' Pignose is that there's too much gain and too little headroom to ever really clean up at high volumes. The speaker also seems to contrubute to the sound when driven hard. The best you might be able to do is back off the guitar volume control, a trick that works on my old germanium-transistored pignose and many low input impedance circuits. I believe current Pignoses probably have the same effect. And a simple unity gain buffer before the amp can clean things up a bit.
